I illustrated a series of books for the Kehkimin Wolastoqey Language Immersion school, a land-based language immersion school located north of Fredericton, New Brunswick (CA). Wolastoqey is a language indigenous to parts of the Northeast with fewer than 100 speakers, most of whom are 65+. I was provided a script for each book and photos of characters, and given artistic freedom to bring the stories to life.
This series of 20+ books, funded by the US Department of Education, is one of the largest projects I’ve worked on as a designer at The Language Conservancy. It is also one that I have grown to lead. I have worked on storyboarding, design, book layout and illustration in more than 10 titles, with another 10+ yet to be released. These books have so far been translated into Mvskoke, Crow, Umóⁿhoⁿ, Cheyenne, Dilzhe’e Apache, San Carlos Apache, Yavapai, Cowlitz Coast Salish, Lakota and Dakota. It has involved working with schools and Tribal Nations ranging from Umóⁿhoⁿ Nation Public Schools (eastern Nebraska) to the Cowlitz Indian Tribe (Pacific Northwest).
Fifth Quadrant is a collaborative comic created by me and Brian McCray. It was published through Radical Moisture Press. This first issue contains 20 pages.
I’m an artist on a team of four, working as part of the independent publisher Radical Moisture Press. Our main endeavor is a small publication called Umbrella Policy. Two of us are visual artists and two of us are writers. Each issue of Umbrella Policy is filled with illustrations, comics, photography, and poetry.
